Keto Bacon Coffee Recipe

Jump to recipe

The keto diet is full of wacky food ideas. There’s something very freeing about the liberty to add whatever high-fat ingredients you want to a recipe.

At this point, most people wouldn’t think twice about adding grass-fed butter to their coffee (bulletproof coffee style). But if you really want to play outside the box, try adding a slice of crispy bacon.

Aren’t keto recipes fun?

This low-carb bacon coffee is:

  • Warm
  • Comforting
  • Sweet
  • Savory

The main ingredients in this coffee recipe are:

3 Health Benefits of Keto Bacon Coffee

#1: Boosts Energy and Focus

One of the obvious side effects of coffee is the energy boost that caffeine supplies.

But coffee offers a little bit more magic than a simple energy boost; it can also help keep you focused and alert. As a central nervous system stimulant, coffee can pull you out of your foggy-headed daze and make you a task-oriented machine.

In fact, coffee consumption is associated with increased learning, memory, performance, and coordination. Pretty much everything a multi-tasking professional needs to get their job done efficiently.

A compound in coffee, called methylxanthine, is likely responsible for these alerting effects. It seems that methylxanthine may affect the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine, resulting in enhanced energy and performance[*].

#2: Balances Blood Sugar

Stevia is the perfect sweetener to add to your keto bacon coffee. It not only acts as a sugar-free stand-in for regular table sugar, but it may help sensitize your cells to glucose.

When you eat anything with carbohydrates, it causes a rise in your blood sugar. For a keto dieter, this rise in blood sugar could mean the difference between staying in ketosis or being kicked out.

For this reason, following a ketogenic diet means keeping your carbs low. But it certainly doesn’t hurt to consume foods that support low blood glucose (aka blood sugar).

Research shows that extracts of stevia can help sensitize your cells to glucose. This means that more glucose will be taken up out of your bloodstream instead of hanging around in circulation[*].

When your blood is flooded with glucose is initiates a hormonal cascade which switches your body away from fat-burning and back to carb-burning mode. Therefore, adding stevia to your coffee may have a beneficial effect on your entire meal.

#3: Reduces Hunger

The slice of bacon in your coffee may not be enough to fill you up, but the addition of MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides) make this coffee a proper snack.

Research shows that consuming MCTs can have a profound effect on your appetite. These easily absorbed fatty acids not only provide a quick source of fuel, but they also help curb your hunger leading to reduced food intake.

In one study, a group of overweight men were given either MCTs or LCTs (long-chain triglycerides) with breakfast. The volunteers were then given lunch a few hours later, as researchers measured their food intake.

The group that consumed the MCTs before lunch ate significantly less food than the LCT group. This reduction in appetite and food intake may have been correlated with increased satiety hormones, but more research needs to be done[*].
