Keto Gyro Meat with Tzatziki Sauce

Skip your favorite Greek takeout and whip up this delicious gyro meat with homemade Tzatziki sauce. This authentic dish is so flavorful, the meat so tender and juicy, and will match any restaurant gyro around!

Ingredients

Gyro:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound ground lamb 
  • 2 large eggs (slightly beaten)
  • 1 small onion (finely diced or shredded)
  • 4 cloves garlic (finely minced)
  • 1/4 cup milk of choice
  • 2 tablespoons coconut flour 
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon marjoram

Tzatziki:

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/2 cup cucumber (finely shredded)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic (finely minced)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • 1 tablespoon dill
  •  pinch black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.  Set aside.
  2. Start making the sauce by shredding the cucumber using a box grater.  Add to a clean kitchen towel and ring out all excess liquid.
  3. Add shredded cucumber and remaining Tzatziki sauce ingredients to a small bowl.  Whisk to combine.  Add more salt and adjust seasoning if needed.  Cover with foil and place in the fridge.
  4. In a large bowl, add all gyro meat ingredients.  Using your hands, work ingredients until everything is well distributed.
  5. Shape mixture into small oval rounds and place them on the prepared baking sheet.  Allow 1-2” of space between each patty.
  6. Bake for 15-16 minutes until slightly golden brown and the center reaches an internal temperature of 160°F.  Remove from the oven immediately.
  7. Cut each serving into slices and add them to a large skillet with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter.  Cook on HIGH heat until meat is browned and the edges are crispy.
  8. Assemble the dish by adding gyro meat to each pita.  Garnish with red onion, tomato, and sliced cucumbers if desired.  Top with a dollop of tzatziki sauce.
