3 Health Benefits of Charcoal Lemonade
#1: Detoxifying
Activated charcoal’s (AC) primary claim to fame is its ability to help detoxify your digestive tract. It has a large surface area, which allows for the binding of many drugs and toxins.
In fact, AC is often given to acute overdose patients as a way to inhibit the absorption of drugs into systemic circulation.
The key with activated charcoal is the “activation” process, which creates a surface area primed for attracting and excreting toxins out of your body.
It should be noted that it needs to be taken pretty soon after ingestion of any toxic chemicals if you want to prevent absorption[*].
Research does show, however, that taking activated charcoal over the long-term can prove beneficial for patients with kidney disease. Likely due to the long-term effect of inhibiting toxin absorption in the gastrointestinal tract[*].
#2: Relieves Indigestion
If you’re someone who needs to watch what you eat due to digestive issues, activated charcoal may be just what you’re looking for.
Indigestion can show up in many shapes and forms. Some people experience gas and bloating, while others have to deal with nausea, reflux, or the feeling of slow digestion.
However it shows up, indigestion is unanimously uncomfortable and sometimes embarrassing.
Due to its ability to bind unwanted chemicals in your gut, charcoal may relieve symptoms of indigestion — allowing you to enjoy your meals worry-free.
In one study, researchers gave a group of volunteers a typically gas-producing meal followed by AC. After the meal, the researchers assessed the digestive response of the volunteers to find that those who took the AC had significantly less gas than the placebo group[*].
#3: Supports Immunity
Lemons are a great source of your immune systems favorite vitamin —vitamin C[*].
As an antioxidant compound, vitamin C supports your body by supporting the function of your immune system on multiple levels.
From the outside, It helps protect your body from pathogens by supporting your skins defense system. That’s why a lot of skincare companies sneak vitamin C into their products.
From the inside, It helps to fight reactive oxygen species, kill off microbes, and supports the function of your immune cells. It also plays a role in clearing old immune cells from your body.
When someone becomes deficient in vitamin C (a very rare condition these days), they become more susceptible to infections and experience overall impaired immunity[*].
So don’t skimp out on that fresh lemon juice in your lemonade recipe.
